5) J. Red & Co.
Definitely one of the most modern restaurants in Brampton, from the atmosphere to the innovative menu. Located on Vodden and Main is one of the gems in the city. Chef Jason Rosso is the mastermind behind the menu and if his name sounds familiar to you, it's probably because he has appeared on such TV shows as Restaurant Makeover, Recipe to Riches and the Marilyn Dennis Show. He is known for offering familiar food with a twist and the menu does not disappoint. What's better than going out on a date and experimenting with a new style of food you have never tried before? You can try things like smoked cheddar mac 'n cheese, egg rolls and crispy fried cauliflower ‘wings.’ My favourite is the Bob and Doug burger. Even if you have nothing to talk about, you can still talk about the food!
When you think of street meat, you might think about going to town on a foot-long hot dog before a Jay’s game or after a long night of clubbing. You might even think of satisfying a hearty craving after a hectic hour at a local Costco or Canadian Tire. Even if you have fond memories of curbside sausages, you probably never associated the scrumptious meal with freshness and variety. JB’s Street Meat invites diners to enjoy casual but well-crafted meat and BBQ dishes indoors. While owner Jonathan Boone and his team like to change up the menu based on the day’s shopping, they do offer some staples that diners can expect to see on the menu daily, offering a core menu with pulled pork and pulled chicken, mac and cheese, ribs and more. While fresh cuisine is incredibly popular, it’s typically associated with higher price points and the associated expenses sometimes deter diners looking to spend less on their meals. According to Boone, customers need not fear hefty price tags at his resto, as filling foods are competitively priced for the average diner.
If you want authentic Mexican Food in the city, look no further than La Catrina located on Queen Street West in downtown Brampton, featured in our cover photo. The restaurant is family owned (it uses recipes from “La Abuela” - grandmother’s recipes) and brings true, authentic flavour that captures the essence of Mexico. Chef Eddie Bachur and his team provide a wide selection of authentic good eats from tacos to cerviche and burritos and house-made mole dishes. And if you’re staying for dessert (which we know you will) you will have to try the churros (Fried dough pastry dusted with sugar and cinnamon) or a favourite amongst the InBrampton team - the Pastel De Tres Leches (a vanilla sponge cake soaked in three milks filled with peach—not to be confused by the classic Big Pun song).
The Sul Irmaos Smokehouse is located in the heart of downtown Brampton and specializes in Portuguese southern fusion cuisine. The restaurant is known for its smoked meat, which is smoked (low and slow) and it was even featured on the Food Network’s You Gotta Eat Here. Must eat dishes include the beef eater (southern slow smoked brisket, deep fried okra and shrimp and collard greens, served with Creole mustard, house gravy and Caesar dressing) and the pulled pork and Beanasaurus (southern slow smoked pulled pork, homemade mama's chill, fresh cut creamy coleslaw and fried mac and cheese bites).
Recently, we announced that we were pretty pumped to hear that a brand new Portuguese restaurant had opened in Brampton. Portas Do Mar - or, “Doors to the Sea” - has settled into a location at Main and Vodden, where Martin’s BBQ Chicken used to be. The location is now under new ownership. The restaurant boasts BBQ chicken, grilled meat, and seafood on their menu, with healthy sides of potatoes, veggies, and rice. Anyone craving flavourful grilled meat in hearty portions seems to be in for a treat, as the resto is easily accessible to visitors from its central location.
