5 Things to do if You’re Broke in Brampton

Published May 25, 2018 at 10:53 pm

Come summer, there a hundred things to do in the city.

And after hibernating through winter, there’s no way you’re staying home on weekends.

Even if you’re constantly short on money.

You’ve just got to be smart and find things to do that are cheap. Here are some ideas.

5) Go on an art tour

Brampton has several public art installations that you could tour on your own. If you’re not up for all 28, break it down. Tour all the 13 installations in downtown or perhaps the four in Mount Pleasant. Or maybe check out a couple works of graffiti. Take your pick! If you’d rather visit a gallery than hop around the city. Then, the Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA) is more suited for you. The fee is a meagre $5, and you’l get to see art, collectables, old photos and newspapers and more.

Not feeling an art tour? How about nerding out at The Great War Flying Museum for a small donation? Gawk at vintage planes, uniforms, memorabilia and more. Or perhaps, old architecture and antiques excite you more. Head over to the historic Boviard House. A Georgian-style brick farmhouse, the house is a wonder of symmetry and proportions.

4) Watch a free flick

It’s summer, so movie nights are on their way back in the city. Starting on Saturday June 16, you can watch a movie at Garden Square every Saturday night in under the night sky. All you’ve got to do is bring a chair and some snacks! You can find the full lineup here. And, in July you can also try out Movies Under the Stars – stay tuned for that lineup!

There’s a ton of stuff happening at Garden Square this summer, as well.

3) Play at the park

You don’t have to be a kid to play at the park! Chinguacousy Park has many activities that you could do either cheap or for free. And, if you have kids, there’s a lot of stuff for them to do too. You can visit the tropical garden, the mini moo farm or the petting zoo ($1). Pony rides will set you back $3.64 and for $4 you can mini golf! There are splash pads and a skateboard park too. And, if the weather is kind, take a half hour paddle boat ride for $9.50.

2) Catch a show

The Rose Theatre has a ton of budget-friendly shows happening year round, so scope out what’s playing and check out a show or two if it fits your budget! The new season kicks off on July 24.

Music in the park is also on its way back starting on June 13! At Gage Park every Tuesday from June 13-August 28 from 7-9 p.m., with a grand finale on August 31 from 7-10 p.m., you can catch inspirational tunes at the park. Both locals and professionals come out to perform, and the concert series attracts a ton of Bramptonians with southern gospel, jazz, reggae, contemporary, traditional, instrumentalists and dancers.

1) Eat and drink for cheap

Broke is not a reason to not eat out. Mostly because you’ll always find something that fits your budget. Even if it’s from McDonald’s Dollar Menu. But, you won’t have to because if you’ve got $5 to spare, you can get a decent meal in Brampton. For drinks, get martinis for $4.99 at 52nd Street Tap & Grill on Thursdays. On Fridays and Saturdays, $5.50 for a 6oz glass of wine and $5.75 for coolers a Tracks Brewpub. Out with a group on Saturday night? Head to Canelli’s for $13.99 pitchers of margaritas, daiquiris, mojitos and sangria.
