A Popular Netflix Movie Has Inspired a Challenge That Could Injure You
Long gone are the days where watching Netflix was just a fun and relaxing leisurely pastime.
Now, binge watching your favourite TV show may result injuries. Well, at least if you watch one specific movie (and act upon a challenge inspired by it).
The Internet erupted with enthusiasm when this drama, horror, and sci-fi film was released (it made its way onto Canadian Netflix on Dec. 21, 2018).
The movie, which stars Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, and John Malkovich, according to Netflix, takes place five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide. The film follows a survivor and her two children as they try to reach safety.
So, where does the danger for viewers come into play?
Like most popular things on the Internet, the hype of Bird Box has resulted in a new challenge dubbed ‘The Bird Box Challenge’.
With this challenge, people blindfold themselves and attempt to complete their everyday tasks (something the characters have to do in the movie).
However, although seemingly harmless, this challenge has and can result in injuries.
And recently, Netflix took action.
Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.— Netflix US (@netflix) January 2, 2019
It is truly scary that Netflix has to tell people not to imitate something they see in a movie. #BirdBoxChallenge— Will Turc (@WillTurc) January 4, 2019
