The provincial government is bringing alcohol to convenience stores across Ontario.

On March 28 Vic Fedeli, Ontario’s Minister of Finance, spoke at the Empire Club about the 2019 Ontario budget which will be released on April 11. Fedeli noted that the government’s plan surrounding public services such as the education system and the health care system will be included in this budget.

Fedeli also noted that the provincial government is moving forward with bringing beer and wine to convenience stores across the province.

No timeline was given.

“Our government is actively working to expand the sale of beer and wine into corner stores, box stores, and even more grocery stores.” Fedeli said during his speech.

Fedeli continued, “We made a commitment during the campaign to provide consumers with greater choice in convenience and we plan on delivering.”

This, according to a recent CBC article, will lower prices on beer and wine. This initiative will also help guarantee that the government does not need to privatize assets in order to increase availability of products.

Fedeli noted that Ontario currently has the lowest density of retail outlets that sell beer, wine, cider, and spirits in all of Canada.
