Big Changes Coming to GO Transit Fares Soon
Big changes are coming to GO Transit fares this month. Trips may become cheaper or more expensive depending on how far you’re travelling.
Metrolinx recently announced that it will be lowering PRESTO fares for short-distance GO Transit trips (trips that are around 10 kilometres or less) in the Greater Golden Horseshoe by more than $1.
According to a recent Metrolinx blog post, fares for short-distance GO trips are being lowered to $3.70.
This new fare will apply to any trips made between any GO station, or bus stop, across the region that are roughly within 10 kilometres of each other.
In addition, anyone who pays with a single-fare paper ticket will also be able to take advantage of this reduced fare - going from the lowest fare of $5.30 to $4.40.
“These significant reductions in short-distance fares, by at least 21 per cent and by as much as 40 per cent for some journeys, is a huge step towards making public transit even more affordable and more attractive for the people in our communities,” Metrolinx President and CEO Phil Verster said in the release.
“This gives our GO customers a better, faster and easier way to get across town for work, trips to the mall, family visits or a night out.”
This change will come into effect on April 20, 2019. However, this is not the only change that is coming to GO Transit.
Metrolinx also announced that it will be increasing fares for longer trips.
Also on April 20, PRESTO fares for trips longer than 10 kilometres will increase by up to four per cent. The cost of a single-fare paper ticket will increase by up to 10 per cent for trips that are also longer than 10 kilometres.
“With these fare changes, the discount for using PRESTO instead of single-fare paper tickets will increase from 11 per cent to 16 per cent,” reads the release.
The Metrolinx Board of Directors will vote on these proposed fare changes on April 10, 2019.
