Beginning mid-January 2020, the city of Brampton will be using an automatic licence plate reader (ALPR) vehicle which will patrol for faster and more efficient parking enforcement.

This new technology will help to improve parking spot availability within the city, along with providing safe passage for plows and emergency vehicles and will work toward reducing congestion over time.

Each year, the city of Brampton responds to more than 10,000 public complaints of vehicles parked illegally for more than three hours as well as another 10,000 complaints regarding vehicles parked on the street during prohibited times.

The cameras on the new ALPR vehicle will be able to identify common parking infractions and notify officers to generate a Penalty Notice after it has been determined.

The vehicle will also be patrolling in areas where the city receives frequent complaints about vehicles being parked for extended periods of time.

This system will work by having cameras attached to a vehicle and an in-vehicle display connected to the parking enforcement network.

It will patrol the streets and record the license plates and locations of vehicles parked on the street before alerting the Enforcement Officer.

“Illegal parking reduces the spots available to others, and can also pose a safety risk when emergency vehicles and snow plows cannot pass through streets easily. The new ALPR vehicle supports our priority of being a Well-Run City, addressing illegal parking and paving the way for safer roads. The City will be open to learning from the effectiveness of this new initiative and make adjustments for the future,” said Mayor Patrick Brown.

Based on its performance, additional ALPR vehicles may be used in the future.
