Brampton issues 12 additional physical distancing fines amid COVID-19 outbreak
At a May 13 conference, Mayor Patrick Brown discussed additional measures to help cope with the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and provided details on the latest physical distancing fines and warnings.
Today's conference featured Mayor Patrick Brown, Councillors Charmaine Williams and Paul Vicente and Dr. Lawrence Loh, Interim Medical Officer of Health, Peel Region.
During the announcement, Brown further discussed the importance of physical distancing and Williams provided details on the reasons behind the latest fines that were issued in the City of Brampton.
According to Williams, there were 28 charges laid between May 5 and May 11, 2020, which all fell under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.
“This past week, there were 230 complaints for residential and social gatherings received through the call centre resulting in 12 charges being laid,” said Williams.
“Five charges were related to another parking lot gathering and three charges at three different parks for using equipment, which I remind you, still remain closed.”
Additionally, this past week, there were six charges laid for nonessential contract work being completed which included kitchen and bathroom renovations as well as one large supermarket that was charged for not following governmental regulations surrounding social distancing while operating their essential business.
“If you don’t want to pay the fine, don’t do the crime,” said Williams, emphasizing that enforcement and bylaw services take complaints seriously.
“We will continue to focus the health of Brampton residents and if we continue to practice social distancing together, we can prevent the spread and continue to flatten curve.”
