Brampton Kicking Off the Holiday Season with Events All Weekend

The holiday season is upon us and Brampton is getting into the Christmas spirit with an entire weekend of festive events, starting with its annual Christmas Tree Lighting.

The holiday season is upon us and Brampton is getting into the Christmas spirit with an entire weekend of festive events, starting with its annual Christmas Tree Lighting.

The tree lighting, which will take place this Friday, Nov. 18 at Ken Whillans Square/City Hall, boasts a slew of family friendly activities and some decidedly unique spectacles.

In terms of entertainment, there will be letters to Santa, a princess show, a Battle of the Chainsaws ice sculpting demonstration, pixel and fire performances, an LED ballet performance and a laser light show.

If you have littles ones, you’ll probably be happy to know that there will be a Kids Zone at Gage Park. At the park, kids can meet some of Santa’s reindeer, decorate cookies, enjoy maple taffy and watch a Snow Globe skating show. The Glow Lounge will also be showing Frozen.

Since Christmas is all about giving, you can also help support the Brampton Food Drive and Peel Regional Police Toys for Tots campaign by dropping off non-perishable food items or unwrapped toys at the main entrance of city hall.

You should note that road closures will be in effect from 3:00-9:00 p.m. to accommodate the festivities. According to the city, closures will affect the following routes:

  • Queen Street – George Street to Chapel Street
  • Wellington Street West – George Street South to Main Street South
  • Main Street South – southbound lanes – Queen Street to Wellington Street*
  • Main Street North – northbound lanes – Queen Street to Nelson Street**
  • *Main Street South – northbound lanes from Queen Street to Wellington Street will be converted to two-way traffic
  • **Main Street North – southbound lanes from Nelson to Queen Street will be converted to two-way traffic

While the tree lighting is a huge event in and of itself, it’s not the only festivity on tap for the weekend. The Downtown Brampton Christmas Market will also kick off on Nov. 18 at 4:00 p.m. and run until Nov. 20. It will take place in the Garden Square and will actually come with a few bonus weekends. If you miss the main event, no need to worry – the market will pop up again on Nov. 25-27 and Dec. 2-4.

On Saturday, Nov. 19, residents can check out the Brampton Board of Trade’s Santa Claus Parade. The parade will kick off at 5:00 p.m. and run along this route. Letters to Santa will be collected along the parade route and observers are welcome to donate non-perishable items to the Canadian Progress Club.
