For the past three years, Brampton Library has brought together the community with themes from a single book in their popular One Book One Brampton campaign.

This year, the campaign’s winning book was A Good Wife: Escaping the Life I Never Chose by Samra Zafar and Meg Masters, which was chosen through a public vote, from a shortlist among others.

On November 19, 2019, the celebration of the campaign’s winning book included a presentation by author Samra Zafar and an on-stage conversation with Meg Masters, her collaborator, which was moderated by Taranum Khan, local community booster and Ph.D.

In this book, Zafar shares her story on how she escaped a decade of abuse and life as a child bride in Canada.

“Brampton Library will always be about books. One Book One Brampton is an event to celebrate the power of story, both true and fictional,” said Brampton Library CEO Rebecca Raven.

“This evening, we are delighted to honour A Good Wife: Escaping the Life I Never Chose and to welcome Samra Zafar and Meg Masters to our award-winning Springdale Branch Library. We are pleased to be discussing such a compelling memoir,” she added.

Usually, ghostwriters work behind the scenes, but at the celebration, the attendees learned how Masters’ and Zafar’s collaboration was able to share Zafar’s story with victims who have also suffered domestic abuse.

The evening concluded with a Q&A segment, where the audience asked questions and engaged in conversation.
