This week, Mayor Patrick Brown and Regional Councillors Martin Medeiros and Paul Vicente will take Brampton’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to Portugal, where they will attend Web Summit 2019, the world’s largest tech conference.

This conference will include 70,000 attendees, which will include founders, CEOs of technology companies, policy makers, up-and-coming startups, heads of state and 1,200 speakers.

Web Summit aims to bring people and companies together by redefining the tech industry.

Innovation and technology is thriving in Brampton and will provide the city’s representatives the chance to connect with industry-leading professionals.

It will also serve as a chance to share investment opportunities for Brampton, who is developing its own Innovation Ecosystem in the centre of the Toronto-Waterloo Innovation Corridor.

The Innovation Ecosystem will include a Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst, a Brampton Entrepreneur Centre (ideation and co-working space), a new startup incubator led by a global leader, a $150M investment into a new Centre for Innovation, a scale-up incubator and branding of “Innovation District” in downtown Brampton, adjacent to the Go Train station connecting Brampton to Toronto and Waterloo.

Last month, Brampton launched its FDI strategy Investment Missions at the MedTech Conference in Boston, before attending the Anuga Food Fair in Cologne, Germany.

This is where the team participated in multiple investment-focused meetings and were able to connect with businesses from Brampton with goals of expanding their operations.

This experience also helped to secure many new contacts, which staff are currently following up on.

The FDI strategy is key to delivering the City’s Economic Development Master Plan (EDMP) and Brampton’s 2040 Vision, while filling gaps in the supply chain, diversifying the tax base, promoting economic growth and raising Brampton’s profile on a global scale as a competitive place to do business.

This will benefit all Brampton residents by attracting new investment and jobs to the city.

The key sectors focused in Brampton’s FDI efforts include Health and Life Sciences, Advanced Manufacturing (including Food and Beverage Manufacturing) as well as Innovation and Technology.
