Due to extended facility closures and programming cancellations in response to COVID-19, the City of Brampton has made the decision to temporarily suspend the employment of approximately 2,000 part-time, temporary/casual, and seasonal staff members in non-essential and non-critical services effective April 18, 2020.

This measure is temporary and Brampton hopes to have these employees return to the City as soon as they are able to resume the various programs and services.

Earlier this week, the City announced that all festivals, events, performances and community event permits for events at City facilities and performing arts centres, are cancelled until July 1, 2020, with guidance from the Brampton Emergency Management Office and Peel Public Health, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In the meantime, Brampton remains committed to providing support services to employees who have been impacted and anticipates that many of them will be eligible for financial support from the Government of Canada’s benefits programs.

“These are undoubtedly some of the most challenging times the City has seen, which has led us to tough but necessary decisions,” said Mayor Patrick Brown.

“The extended closure of City facilities meant a change in how we deliver programs and services. Our focus remains a sustainable response that lessens the long-term, negative impacts of this pandemic while allowing us to help protect the safety of our community and deliver essential and critical services residents rely on.”

The City will continue to deliver essential and critical services including Fire and Emergency Services, Transit, Animal Services, Works Operation and Maintenance, Parks and Forestry Operations, Security Services, Site Plan Applications, Building Permits/Inspections, Official Plan Amendments (OPAs) and Rezoning Planning Applications, 311 and Administrative/Technical functions.
