Today, (April 24), the Ford government announced that the Canadian Armed Forces will be providing support to five long-term care homes within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), including one in the City of Brampton amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

The long-term care home in Brampton that will be receiving this support is Holland Christian Homes Grace Manor, located at 45 Kingknoll Drive.

When asked for his thoughts, Mayor Patrick Brown told inbrampton that he was “relieved.”

“I had asked for help for Grace Manor from the premier, the minister of long-term care and from the federal government,” said Brown, who added that Grace Manor has had 49 positive cases of COVID-19 to date.

“It’s going up by the day. There are 1,200 residents there at Holland Christian homes, so it’s like a tinderbox. This can spread so quickly,” he said.

Brown also shared that earlier today, he was on the phone with the premier and told him that he appreciated the support for their request because it was much needed.

The military will be doing health-care related work at Grace Manor and have 50 to 60 military personnel there from all aspects of healthcare, according to Brown.

“Right now, you’ve got these long-term care centers in there under siege,” said Brown.

“Staffing has dramatically reduced and these people can’t come in. They’re under self-isolation and we’ve seen an enormous number of the long-term care Personal Support Workers (PSW’s) and nurses test positive themselves,” adding that the current battle is to save lives.

The four other long-term care homes that will be receiving support are Eatonville Care Centre in Etobicoke, Hawthorne Place in North York, Orchard Villa in Pickering and Altamont Care in Scarborough.
