As 2020 begins, Brampton City Council is set to welcome the public to the new year.

As 2020 begins, Brampton City Council is set to welcome the public to the new year.

The City of Brampton is hosting the traditional New Year’s Levee where Mayor Patrick Brown and city councillors welcome members of the public to city hall.

An age-old tradition that dates back to the 17th century, the event is a staple in other municipalities, establishments and institutions. For Brampton’s levee, residents will see a Piper lead the Mayor and councillors in a procession, and hear a welcoming from the Town Crier.

While other levees of this nature usually take place on a weekend, the mayor’s office confirmed that Brown is flying out to India on that evening and that the date was picked by the Mayor.

In previous years, the levee was held on a weekend, but this year, it will take place on Thursday, January 2, 2020, from 4 to 7 pm in the City Hall Atrium.

“I expect we will get a good turnout as many residents could still be on vacation,” the mayor’s spokesperson said in an email to inbrampton.com.

Previously new year’s levees held in Brampton were on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 1 to 3 pm (under former mayor Linda Jeffrey) and this past January 12 at city hall (Brown’s first as mayor), which also fell on a Saturday.

By contrast, the City of Mississauga is hosting their new year’s levee on Sunday January 12, 2020 from 1 to 4 pm.

Free refreshments will be provided at the levee along with opportunities to take photos with Mayor Brown.
