Doug Ford plans to extend state of emergency in Ontario until June 30

In a press conference today (June 1), Premier Doug Ford discussed his plan to extend the province’s Declaration of Emergency and associated measures once again until June 30.
The new extension will be meant to keep people safe during the pandemic and to maintain progress in containing the novel coronavirus.
The provincial government recently announced that it would be extending its emergency orders for COVID-19 until June 9 but now, the province may be extending it once again.
On Tuesday, June 2, Ford’s government will ask the legislature to extend the province of Ontario’s current state of emergency for an additional 28 days.
During today’s conference (June 1), reporters questioned why the extension would last four weeks this time around as opposed to two.
“We just want to make sure everyone’s safe and healthy,” said Ford.

When asked whether the province can expect another extension for its state of emergency at the end of June, Ford said it would depend on the numbers.
“If we’re seeing that everything’s moving in the right direction, numbers are going down, then we don’t need to,” said Ford.
Ford concluded by stating that the option to extend the state of emergency could still be a possibility depending on the number of COVID-19 cases at the end of June.
Ontario has been in a state of emergency since March 17.
