Employment in Ontario is up over the last 12 months

Stats Canada released its labour force survey for November this week, which found the unemployment rate is down across the country year-over-year.

According to the report, the employment rate was up by 293,000–or 1.6 per cent from November 2018 to November 2019. The majority of this increase was associated with full-time work, and the total number of hours worked was up 0.2 per cent.

However, while employment was up over the last 12 months, it saw a decrease in November by 71,000–or 0.4 per cent–which saw the unemployment rate climb to 5.9 per cent.

Additionally, employment for core-aged men–ages 24 to 55–was down by 30,000 for the month of November; however, the employment rate for this group was up 0.8 per cent for the year.

The numbers for core-aged women remained the same for the most part–with the unemployment rate rising slightly by 0.3 per cent to 4.7 per cent overall.

Further, employment for young men and women was up by 96,000 for the year–an increase of 3.9 per cent.

Employment for the goods and services sector saw a decrease, as there were 28,000 fewer people working in manufacturing, and 6,500 fewer people working in natural resources for the month of November.

Ontario saw the employment rate increase by 0.2 per cent in November, while the employment rate rose by 3.2 per cent in the province over the last 12 months.
