On Sunday, September 10, fire stations across Brampton will fly their flags at half-mast to pay tribute to the over 1,300 firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty across Canada since 1848.
The second Sunday of September is a notable day, as it marks Firefighters’ National Memorial Day every year. For the past 14 years, the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation has used the second Sunday of September to pay tribute, but now, the practice has been formalized.
Brampton firefighters and the Brampton Fire and Emergency Services Honour Guard will be in Ottawa to participate in Firefighters’ National Memorial Day ceremonies.
“Firefighters’ National Memorial Day commemorates courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment of firefighters as they serve their communities. Brampton is proud and grateful to participate in this memorial,” said the city in a statement.
So, if you pass by a fire station on Sunday and notice that the flag is flying lower than usual, now you’ll know why, and you can pay tribute, too.
