Four Brampton Students Make Ontario's Top Scholar List With 100 Per Cent Average
Four Brampton students have made Ontario’s Top Scholar list with a perfect average.
Students from Harold M. Brathwaite Secondary School and Turner Fenton Secondary School achieved the highest averages within the Peel District School Board during the 2018-19 school year.
Paawan Virdi of Harold M. Brathwaite Secondary School, and Riyadh Baksh, Kunal Chawla and Richard Li of Turner Fenton Secondary School, achieved a perfect average of 100 per cent making it to the top of Ontario’s Top Scholar list.
Virdi says, having “teachers who were passionate about their subjects made me want to achieve and work as hard as they do.”
He is working towards a future in the medical field and will be attending McMaster University in the fall to study integrated science.
Baksh will also be attending McMaster University in the fall.
“After completing my undergraduate degree in engineering, I plan to pursue further studies such as a master’s degree or even a doctorate. While my imagination can dream of so many career opportunities, I believe that I will focus on engineering new devices in the medical sector. With this career, I would be actively bettering the lives of millions,” says Baksh.
Chawla intends to study mathematics in the fall at the University of Toronto. His advice for next year’s grade 12 students is to be ambitious both academically and in extracurricular activities.
“Having lofty goals is the best way to achieve a lot, even if you don’t meet those initial goals. A target to work towards is the best thing you can have,” says Chawla.
Li will pursue a Bachelor of Commerce at Queen’s University on the Dr. Iris May Marsh Memorial Award, which is only awarded to two students with superior academic ability, proven leadership qualities, involvement in school/community activities, and financial need. He will receive $48,000 towards his study. Li also has his own business called EcoShare Inc., a vehicle management company that provides vehicles to Uber drivers.
“For me, high-class participation and meaningful one-on-one discussions have helped me forge strong relationships with many of my teachers, which has allowed me to learn more effectively both inside and outside the classroom,” says Li.
These students are among over 5,000 Peel board students who made Ontario’s Top Scholar list by graduating grade 12 with an average of 80 per cent or higher in their top six grade 12 courses.
