Government Updates Travel Advisory For Sri Lanka After Another Explosion

The Government of Canada has updated the travel advisory for Sri Lanka after yesterday’s attacks.
On Easter Sunday, numerous hotels and churches were attacked in Sri Lanka in a coordinated series of bombings. It killed 290 people and injured about 500. The attacks targeted tourism hotspots and churches.
A travel advisory has been issued to advise Canadians to use a “high degree of caution” when going or in the country due to their current security situations.
The travel advisory states, “the decision to travel is your choice and you are responsible for your personal safety abroad. We take the safety and security of Canadians abroad very seriously and provide credible and timely information in our Travel Advice to enable you to make well-informed decisions regarding your travel abroad.”
The Canadian Government later states that if any Canadian are in Sri Lanka, the should “avoid the affected areas, limit your movements, allow extra time for increased security measures at airports, be aware of your surroundings at all times, follow the instructions of local authorities and monitor local media to stay informed of the evolving situation.”
According to CNN, multiple warnings were received by the Sri Lankan government days before the attacks occurred. National Thawahid Jaman, a international terror group, may behind the attack as they are known to deface Buddhist statues.

Authorities also found 87 detonators and a ninth improvised explosive device last night. This morning, three bombs detonated in a van at a church, but no injuries were reported.
