Here’s how Brampton residents can learn more about the Shoppers World redevelopment

Back at the beginning of 2020, an updated vision for the Shoppers World redevelopment was revealed.

Back at the beginning of 2020, an updated vision for the Shoppers World redevelopment was revealed.

In a planning and developing meeting on January 13, there was an application proposed to amend the zoning by-law and create a draft plan of subdivision to allow the redevelopment of the Shoppers World mall located at 499 Main Street South.

The applicant submitted the application on October 2, 2019, and at the meeting, city planning staff announced that they had reviewed the application and found it to be complete in accordance with the Planning Act.

A formal Notice of Complete Application was provided to the applicant on December 17, 2019.

The proposal included a mix of building types with heights ranging from 3 to 28 storeys. Approximately 296,000 square metres (3,200,000 square feet) of residential uses and 89,000 square metres (958,000 square feet) of nonresidential uses were proposed.

In the Secondary Plan, the planning vision described for the site was to “redevelop Shoppers World Brampton into a more vibrant, Mixed-Use, transit-oriented destination.”

The planning vision also stated that retail uses will be encouraged to remain in the area in order to “help create a major shopping node that will be pedestrian and transit focused.”

On Thursday, October 8, residents are invited to learn more about Transit-Oriented Communities and the Uptown Brampton Hurontario-Steeles area (locally known as Shoppers World) at a virtual town hall from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

The Uptown Framework Plan will further implement the Brampton 2040 Vision and the 2018 to 2022 Term of Council Priorities by attracting private investment which will transform the uptown area into a Transit-Oriented Community.

Located at the intersection of Hurontario and Steeles which is a 5-minute walk from the Light Rail Transit station, will be arriving in 2024 and will be anchored by the Shoppers World Urban Community Hub.

Brampton residents will experience increased social and physical connection, urban design supporting active lifestyles, reduced pollution, economic growth and job creation.

The virtual town hall will be hosted by the Urban Land Institute in collaboration with the City of Brampton, City of Helsinki, Greenberg Consultants and University of Toronto School of Cities.

Participants will have the opportunity to hear from industry experts and ask questions about this exciting opportunity to transform the Uptown Shoppers World site into a “20-minute walkable neighbourhood” with an urban community hub that is a high-density, mixed-use, family-friendly, healthy and walkable transit-oriented community.

Notable speakers include Mayor Patrick Brown, Regional Councillor Martin Medeiros, Yvonne Yeung, Manager of Urban Design, Hon. Kinga Surma, Associate Minister of Transportation, Ontario Ministry of Transportation and more.

Those who are interested can register here for the town hall.

“Brampton is a forward-thinking City of opportunities, and we are committed to leading the way on smart planning for vibrant, healthy and complete communities,” said Mayor Patrick Brown.

“I encourage all residents to take part in the Uptown Brampton virtual event, learn about 20-minute walkable communities and have your voice heard on what you would like to see the area become. Together, we can unlock the potential of Uptown Brampton.”
