This week, Mississauga and Brampton residents were treated to some exciting news: The game-changing Hurontario Light Rail Transit project has officially acquired a builder.

Now, residents who are excited to ride the $1.5 billion higher-order transit project can get a sneak peek of the vehicles at Square One this Labour Day weekend. 

Anyone who ventures to Square One this long weekend will get to see a full-scale replica of the Alstom light rail transit vehicle. 

Visitors will get a chance to tour the vehicle for the first time and stop inside for a selfie. Metrolinx says the vehicle is a mock-up of the full-length vehicle that will carry 292 passengers per car.

The mock-up vehicle display is coming hot on the heels of major LRT news. A few days ago, Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx announced that Mobilinx will design, build, finance, operate and maintain the LRT.  

The LRT, once completed, will span 18 km and run from Port Credit GO at Lakeshore Rd. in the south to the Brampton Gateway Terminal at Steeles Ave in the north. 

The LRT will boast 19 stops and provide connections to the Port Credit and Cooksville GO stations, Mississauga Transitway, GO Transit’s Milton line, Lakeshore West rail lines, MiWay and Zum transit lines.

The project will also include a maintenance and storage facility for the light rail vehicles located south of Highway 407 and west of Kennedy Road 

Initially, it was slated to run 20 km and feature 22 stops, but Metrolinx recently announced it was chopping the City Centre loop to reduce costs.

While this news came as quite a shock, the city said it was happy to hear the project was proceeding as planned after the provincial NDP raised the alarm that the Doug Ford government might scrap it all together back in 2018.

The vehicle will be on display and open to the public at entrance 7, near the MiWay and Go Bus Terminals during the following dates and times:

Friday, August 30 – 12 PM to 7 P.M.

Saturday, August 31 – 11 AM to 7 P.M.

Sunday, September 1 – 11 AM to 7 P.M.

Monday, September 2 – 11 AM to 6 P.M.
