The Trudeau government recently announced that it is planning to ban single-use plastics by 2021.

The Trudeau government recently announced that it is planning to ban single-use plastics by 2021. Following the announcement, the government has since received support from both environmental groups and nationwide companies.

And now, Tim Hortons has also weighed in.

Tim Hortons representatives praised the recent announcement, offering to work closely with the government to implement the initiative.

“We all have a responsibility to contribute to a clean environment in Canada and Tim Hortons has already started to implement substantive initiatives that Canadians can be proud of,” said Mike Hancock, Chief Operating Officer for Tim Hortons, in a statement.

In addition to single-use plastics, Tim Hortons announced last month that the company is taking a leadership position on single-use paper cups and is planning to execute a 10-year marketing effort to change consumer perceptions in favour of using reusable cups in their many restaurants.

Other initiatives geared towards sustainable packaging, include their new lids made from polypropylene, a material that is 100 percent recyclable, a new lid for cold beverages that don’t need straws, testing of paper straws and a more environmentally friendly paper cup and rolling out wooden stir sticks to more storefronts.

“We will work closely with our government and industry partners to implement this elimination of single-use plastics – and will also discuss with them our other environmental initiatives including our 10-year campaign to change consumer perceptions in favour of using reusable cups for hot and cold beverages at restaurants,” said Hancock.
