Major Changes Coming for New Businesses in Brampton

If you’re a local entrepreneur, you might be excited to learn that some of Brampton’s startups will soon get a boost.

Brampton is full of independent businesses and local creators looking to create new businesses. And as one of Canada’s fastest growing cities with 14,000 new residents every year, there’s definitely some room for them.

Now, a new angel investor group has launched a chapter in Brampton.

The group is called the CBA Catalysts of Brampton, and it will be supported through an international angel network, Cross Border Angels & Experts (CBA)

On Wednesday July 18, 2018, 50 Brampton investors, mentors and leaders gathered to officially launch the group.

“Through access to their global network, online portal and events, and in partnership with local business leaders and the City’s Economic Development and Culture office, the organization has a goal to spark community and economic development,” reads a recent statement from the City of Brampton.

Brampton is something of a startup incubator, so it’s no surprise that we now have a new angel investor group.

In fact, in 2017, the Brampton Entrepreneur Centre supported 150 startups, delivered seminars and events to more than 4,500 entrepreneurs, and channeled more than $155,000 in funding to launch or grow Brampton businesses.

According to the City, it’s Ashwin Sanzgiri, Vice-President, Scaale Group and Cross Border Angels, and Brampton resident, who is the inspiration behind the Catalysts.

“I would like to see Brampton on the global innovation map,” said Sanzgiri in the statement.

“We already have an eclectic mix of Catalysts that actively participated during the launch in giving feedback to some high quality start-ups and local businesses from across the GTA, including Brampton.”

And the competition is already on for investment and mentorship. At Wednesday’s event, the following six entrepreneurs pitched their businesses to the group:

  • Amit Chauhan, CEO, JobAdX
  • Mallory McKewen, CEO, BridesMade
  • Conner Tidd, Co-Founder, Just Vertical
  • Tracy Pepe, Founder and Adrian Pepe, Director, Nose Knows Design (The Scented L’air)
  • Richard Burton-Williams, Team Member, Justwealth
  • Adnan Zuberi, Founder and Azmat Zuberi, Founder, NoteTonic

Moving forward, the angel investor group aims to connect with local startups and other stakeholders in the Brampton business community.

How will the angel investor group work for local startups?

Well, a screening process will channel the most promising and high potential projects to the Catalysts for deliberation.

Then, eligible projects might score investment, mentorship and guidance with the group.

Of course, the group has an expansive network, so CBA also aims to invite Brampton-based business leaders to actively engage with the Catalysts to support relevant projects.
