An iconic movie theatre in Brampton is shutting down to make way for a massive entertainment centre.

The longstanding Cineplex Orion Gate at 20 Biscayne Crescent has put up notices on its doors revealing the official date that it will shut down to make way for a new Playdium location.

The theatre will officially close on Sunday September 30, 2018.

Following the closure, the space will undergo a major makeover.

The 45,000 square foot space will be converted and reimagined into a complex that’s designed for teens, their friends, and family.

There is a Playdium location in Mississauga near Square One, but this could be a much closer option for many Bramptonians.

And Playdium is still owned by Cineplex.

What can you expect to find at the new location?

“The new Brampton location will feature a selection of classic and new-to-market video and redemption games, as well as unique interactive experiences like virtual reality, bowling, rope courses and laser tag,” reads a statement from June 2018.

But not all of the auditoriums will be taken over by games – Cineplex does plan to keep one of the existing auditoriums.

“We announced the reinvented Playdium concept and our first location in Whitby last October and we couldn’t be more excited today to share the news about our Brampton location,” said Ellis Jacob, President and CEO, Cineplex, in the statement.

“A destination designed primarily for teens, Playdium will be a place where young adults and families can play together and also enjoy and share a freshly made meal that is fun to eat.”

According to Cineplex, two-thirds of the space will be dedicated to games and attractions and the remaining third will contain food and drinks. You can expect lots of casual food options like burgers, pastas, pizzas, poutines, and sweet treats.

Private rooms will also be available for special events like birthdays, and there will be lounges for parents with views of the games floor.

Construction is slated to start in September 2018 and the new Playdium is targeting a mid-2019 opening.

The original Playdium in Mississauga opened over 20 years ago, and now, the brand is expanding quickly. With new locations in Whitby and Brampton, Cineplex plans to open 10-15 more Playdium locations in mid-sized communities across Canada in the coming years.
