According to a recent report, many Canadians are planning to change jobs within the next one to two years.

The report, conducted by Indeed, found that nearly a third of employed Canadians, 32 per cent, said they intend to have a new employer within the next 12 to 24 months.

Additionally, 25 per cent of respondents said they have been actively recruited by another company within the past six months.

The report also found very few–only 16 per cent–of respondents intend to stay with their current company for the next five years.

The biggest reason driving Canadians to search for alternate jobs is benefits–34 per cent believe they would receive better core benefits at another company, while 33 per cent believe other companies have better ancillary benefits.

Additionally, 29 per cent believe other companies could provide better childcare benefits.

Further, 28 per cent of people believe they could have more control over their schedule with another company–such as more flexible hours and the option to work remotely/from home.

Many workers believe the traditional, 9-5 format is outdated and as a result, they’re looking for positions that offer more freedom.

Of the people actively searching for a new job, 39 per cent are doing so to advance their careers–many respondents believe they can land a higher-level position in the same profession with a different company.

As well, it appears not many people are choosing to completely change careers, as only 19 per cent have indicated this as the reason they intend to change jobs.

“The beginning of the year is the perfect time to set goals, and for some, getting a new job can be a major goal for the year ahead. Our survey reveals that as a result of Canada’s strong labour market, workers are increasingly yearning for change,” Jodi Kasten, managing director at Indeed Canada said in a news release.

“With workers becoming more active in their search for the best job opportunity, gone are the days when they would remain at companies for decades. Workers are ready and willing to switch jobs as a way to grow their careers, their income and gain better perks,” she continued.
