Ontario Premier Doug Ford recently announced that social gathering limits will be lowered in Ontario after substantial spikes in new COVID-19 infections.

These limits, however, do not apply to events or gatherings held in convention centres or banquet halls, or to people attending recreational sporting or performing art events.

While this is a great step for the Region of Peel, which has seen an uptick in COVID-19 cases, Mayor Patrick Brown remains concerned over banquet halls and weddings in Brampton.

In a recent conference, Brown said, “There continues to be a number of large events at banquet halls and I think we need some tougher rules when it comes to banquet halls.”

At a committee of council meeting, Brown expressed his concerns once again, stating that they still have to “keep an eye out” on banquet halls and weddings.

At the beginning of the month, Brown was asked about whether potential restrictions could come into place again for social gatherings and told reporters he would welcome the provincial government revisiting the number of people allowed in social gatherings.

Although Brown stated that many Brampton residents were following the rules and “not breaching the emergency law” at the time, the concerns over large gatherings remain an issue with case numbers creeping up again in the region and the province.

Dr. Lawrence Loh, Peel Region’s Medical Officer of Health, also recently expressed his concerns around the uptick of COVID-19 cases tracing back to events at banquet halls and weddings.

People are reminded to practice the four core behaviours amid the COVID-19 pandemic which are to stay apart, lather up, mask up and get tested.
