This week, the Ontario NDP and MPP for Brampton North, Kevin Yarde, called on the Ford government to help the Region of Peel contain and stop the spread of COVID-19.

Yarde’s urgent motion, which was passed, will equip Peel Public Health to hire additional staff as well as do more testing, more community outreach and more proactive workplace inspections in the region.

Before the motion was passed, Yarde emphasized that Brampton’s health care system was “hanging by a thread before the pandemic, thanks to chronic underfunding by Liberal and Conservative governments.”

Additionally, Yarde had expressed his concerns over a possible second wave of COVID-19 and that Brampton’s “already-overflowing hospitals” wouldn’t be able to handle a potential influx.

This is the reason why Yarde moved an urgent motion calling on the Ford government to provide immediate assistance to Peel Public Health.

“I would like to thank all the MPPs that supported my motion calling for immediate provincial assistance for Brampton and the Peel region in our fight against COVID-19,” said Yarde.

“Now it’s time for Doug Ford to act quickly on the decision MPPs in the legislature have made, and give Peel the help it needs to hire more public health staff and do more testing, more contract tracing, and proactive workplace inspections and other actions to stop the spread and protect people in our community.”

The NDP will be watching closely to ensure Doug Ford follows through.

“It’s disappointing that he skipped this important vote, but Andrea Horwath and NDP MPPs Sara Singh (Brampton Centre) and Gurratan Singh (Brampton East) and I won’t rest in the fight for Brampton until we get the support families here need and deserve,” concluded Yarde.
