According to a release from the Province, the government is working to fix the issues associated with the new license plates before the end of March.

The new plates, which have become a hot topic on social media due to the fact they’re difficult if not impossible to see at night, are in the process of being redesigned.

Work on the enhanced plates is scheduled to begin within the next two weeks, and 3M will be providing the material, while testing will be done by law enforcement.

As per the release, the distribution of the new plates will stop by the end of March 4 in order to prevent an increase in the number of Ontarians who will need replacements.

Starting March 5, the white plates that were distributed before the redesigned plates will be given out as a temporary solution for only as long as the existing supply is available.

Starting the week of March 16, the Province will begin distributing the new, enhanced plates.

As of the end of February 26, 71,000 of the defective plates have been distributed–which represents less than one per cent of the active 7.6 million passenger plates in Ontario.

“The Government of Ontario and 3M Canada are working in partnership to resolve issues that have been raised about the new Ontario licence plates. We take these concerns seriously and together have put a plan in place to deliver an enhanced new plate,” Lisa Thompson, Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, said in the release.

“3M Canada is providing material to the Province and testing is being completed by law enforcement and key stakeholders. Manufacturing of the new enhanced plates is expected to begin within two weeks and they will be distributed shortly afterwards. We are pleased to have reached a resolution to this matter at no cost to Ontario taxpayers. We look forward to providing further updates in the coming days to inform Ontario drivers,” she continued.
