A major entertainment company has plans to upgrade and expand its already popular entertainment complex, and the concept could be coming to Brampton!
It’s true – leading entertainment company Cineplex is expanding the Playdium concept beyond Mississauga. The entertainment facility, which opened over 20 years ago in Mississauga on Rathburn across from Square One, will officially be opened in 10-15 mid-sized communities across Canada in the coming years.
Brampton might be prime realty for this kind of a concept – we’re a growing city, could use the entertainment complex to support our population, and it would even provide another option for something fun to do in the city.
According to Cineplex, the brand is being reinvented, specifically designed for “teens, their friends and family who are looking for an affordable entertainment choice for everyday play, casual dining or to celebrate special occasions.”

Each new location will range from a solid 30,000-35,000 square feet in size and be customized for each unique community, says Cineplex. Locations will boast classic and brand new video and redemption games, plus interactive experiences like virtual reality, and even so far as climbing walls, bowling, rope courses, and two-level laser tag!

The majority of the complex – two-thirds, says Cineplex – will be dedicated to games, and the rest will have food and drinks – chef inspired burgers, pastas, pizzas, poutines and sweet delights, to name a few of the casual fast food options that are coming to each location.
“Based on the response we are seeing from The Rec Room, there is tremendous potential to create a destination designed primarily for teens, young adults and also their families,” said Ellis Jacob, president and CEO, Cineplex. “Playdium is going to be a place where Canadian families will be able to play together and also enjoy and share a freshly made meal that is fun to eat.”
Cineplex will also operate the similar, up-and-coming Rec Room concept, the closest location of which is set to open in Mississauga. Though that’s not a bad concept for Brampton, either!
Overall, the space will focus on indoor play, fresh food, and tech-enhanced amenities, and even boast a few private rooms for parties, plus a lounge for parents. Seems like a major upgrade from the Mississauga location.
While the other communities where Cineplex will open Playdium have not yet been announced, the first location will open in the Whitby Entertainment Centrum in Whitby, Ontario. Construction on the over 30,000 square foot complex is scheduled to begin in early 2018, with a completion date targeted for later that same year. More locations shouldn’t take long to follow.
The full list of communities where Playdium will set up shop remains to be seen, though Brampton is not such a far-fetched idea.
