The Region of Peel has issued some tips to help residents manage their salt use during the winter months.
The Region of Peel has issued some tips to help residents manage their salt use during the winter months.
Salt is used on roads, sidewalks, parking lots and driveways help ease driving and walking conditions and make them safer.
However, what many people forget is that the salt doesn’t disappear when the snow and ice melts.
Salt ends up mixing with water from melting snow or rain which in turn, makes its way into rivers and lakes over time, which is harmful for the environment, wildlife and the overall quality of drinking water.

The Region of Peel would like to issue a reminder to apply a small amount of salt across your driveway to help prevent ice and snow from sticking or before snow falls or temperatures drop to freezing.
Other measures residents can take are keeping water from turning into ice by cleaning and repairing eaves troughs and clear storm drains and make sure downspouts are directed away from driveways and walkways and looking for contractors that are “Smart About Salt” certified when hiring others to clear your driveway.
It’s also important to remember that salt should only be used once the snow is removed and only in areas needed for safety.
When it’s too cold for salt to work, there are many other alternatives that can be used including sand, grit, non-clumping kitty litter or magnesium chloride.
