The RCMP has issued a public service announcement regarding scam phone calls Ontario residents have been receiving.

According to a news release, the callers impersonate a police officer, and inform the victim they owe a large sum of money in taxes, and an arrest warrant has been issued for them.

Additionally, the scammers may ask for the victims to disclose either their entire social insurance number or just the last three digits; next, the callers will demand a portion of the money owed be paid immediately via money transfer.

The scammers may also be using a tool to disguise their phone number, so it appears to be a local call.

The RCMP advises anyone who receives a call like this NOT to give out their information or make any payments.

The RCMP is asking anyone who has received a call like this to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by phone at 1-888-495-8501, or via their website.
