On Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019, at around 1:30 p.m. the Brampton Fire Department, along with Peel Police, went to a semi-detached residence in Brampton for a house fire/explosion.
The residence was located on Herdwick Street.
As a result of the explosion, a one-year-old child received second-degree burns and three adult occupants (two males and one female) had minor burns and smoke inhalation.

All parties were taken to hospital and stayed overnight as a precaution.
One day after the incident, the cause of the explosion was discovered.
“On August 14, 2019, members of 21 Division Criminal Investigations Bureau and The Ontario Fire Marshal executed a search warrant at the address on Herdwick Street,” reads a Peel Police press release. “The explosion was confirmed to be caused by an alcohol producing still, located in the basement of the residence.”
As a result, also on Aug. 14, 2019, a 57-year-old Brampton man was charged with alleged arson by negligence. The accused was released on a promise to appear and will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice at a later date.
