Now that cannabis is legal in Canada, many people are looking to break into the market.

According to recent findings, the majority of interest is split between retail and production-related jobs.

In Ontario, the most searched jobs between January 2019 and January 2020 in ascending order are technician, grower, and sales associate; while in Canada, they’re grower, marijuana budtender, and sales associate—sales associate was the most searched job for Canada, as well as Alberta, Ontario, and B.C.

“Over the past year, the most common jobs clicked by those searching for cannabis-related work are split between retail and production-related roles. The retail side includes sales associates and representatives, budtenders, ‘educators,’ and store managers. On production-side, particularly common roles include growers, technicians, trimmers, and quality assurance analysts,” Brendon Bernard, economist at Indeed Canada, said in a news release.

“These roles are generally among the most common jobs clicked on by job seekers searching Cannabis related terms across Ontario, Alberta, and B.C.,” he continued.

“One difference is that a greater share of job seeker interest in Ontario is directed toward production-related roles, while retail jobs capture a larger share of cannabis-related clicks in Alberta and B.C.,” Bernard said.

“This likely reflects a larger footprint among major licensed producers like Canopy, Tillray, and CannTrust, in Ontario than elsewhere. However, the pattern could change somewhat as brick-and-mortar retailers expand operations in Ontario,” he added.
