Those capsules for coffee machines are always a pain.

Why are even using those things? Sure, the coffee is delicious, but it generates too much waste and is a task to recycle.

But since getting good coffee at home is a priority for most, Nespresso Canada has made the recycling task a bit easier.

As of June 11, Canadians can simply mail the aluminum capsules to Nespresso via Canada Post.

Coffee drinkers in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Atlantic Ocean territories will be able to send off their capsules.

All you have to do is get the fully recyclable Red Bag for free by Nespresso, when capsules are purchased. Then, just drop off the sealed bag at a Canada Post outlet or in a red Canada Post mailbox, at no extra cost.

“The Red Bag solution aims to increase the collection capacity of used aluminum Nespresso capsules by making it as easy as possible for our customers to participate,” says Jean-Luc Valleix, Nespresso Canada President.

Nespresso is the only coffee brand right now that repurposes both the capsule and the coffee grounds. This is also preventing the soiling of other recyclable materials.

But what do they do with the used capsules?

They’re shipped to a partner where they undergo a process that separates the coffee grounds from the capsule – the first of its kind in Canada.

While the aluminum gets recycled, the coffee grounds are transformed into compost that’s used by farms.

And, everything is paid for by Nespresso.

Nespresso is aiming to bring the recycling solution to more countries. And, this is part of The Positive Cup program.

Well, at least now we can sip our coffee guilt-free.

A&W food services and IKEA recently announced that they will be cutting back on using plastic straws and plastic products.

It seems like more companies are taking a step toward helping the environment, in their own way.
