Climb out of your igloo – something big is happening at Tim Hortons.

If you’ve ever – like most of us – had a coffee or a tea from Tim Hortons in a paper cup with a plastic lid, you know the struggle of dealing with Tim Hortons’s leaky lids.

They’ve been around for 20 years now and they haven’t changed a bit.

Now, according to The Canadian Press, six of the major coffee chain’s locations are piloting brand new lids.

Tim Hortons president Alex Macedo says the lids are more environmentally friendly, sport a maple leaf, and have been tested by thousands of people.

Macedo says people climbed hundreds of stairs and drove a ton of kilometres with their cups donning these new lids, which aim to stop the leaking.

There’s no doubt that the flimsy brown lids have been cause for gallons of spilled coffee and tea.

New packaging, a new marketing camapaign, and environmental consciousness are all in the works, too.

It’s true that the company has been making some other big changes, including new store interiors and even all-day breakfast.

Perhaps the next step is packaging for donuts where the icing doesn’t end up smeared across the top of the paper bag!
