Ah, Caribbean food. It’s filling and flavourful and although it might evoke memories of tropical vacations and conjure up images of sunny beaches and warm landscapes, it also works as great winter comfort food. Fortunately for Brampton residents, the city boasts a pretty impressive Caribbean food scene–so no one will ever have to search too long or hard for satisfying roti and spicy jerk chicken,

Here are the top five Caribbean restaurants in Brampton.

5) Coconut Breeze

If you’re looking for a Caribbean spot that will provide an enjoyable sit-down dining experience, Coconut Breeze is the way to go. Right beside the infamous 168 Sushi on Kennedy, the exterior looks a little rough and tough but the interior is well put together with sleek looking furniture and staff that tends to you right away and checks in as you dine. Caribbean restaurants vary in their offerings, but this restaurant specializes in Guyanese-Chinese cuisine. I ordered the specialty chicken based off the recommendation of the waitress and although I found the chicken to be pretty appetizing, it was the noodles in the dish that left the lasting impression on me. I was also quite pleased with how little the meal cost me, for just under $10 I received enough special chicken to feed me for the night and to take home with me for lunch the next day.

4) Rose’s Caribbean Kitchen

Looking at my order of oxtail, rice and veggies, I told myself I wouldn’t be able to eat more than half of what I was given. I quickly proved myself wrong by getting through the whole serving and wondering why I hadn’t ordered more. Rose’s Caribbean Kitchen is located right on Hurontario just southwest of Steeles and with this central location, you’ll definitely wonder how you haven’t been to this eatery before. Rose’s offers many options, from porridge of the day to ackee and saltfish and jerk chicken. I originally went in asking for jerk chicken and I was quickly informed when it would take longer than expected; a courteous gesture that allowed me to switch my dish to the oxtail which would take less preparation time. The consideration of the staff alongside the great taste of the food left a mark on me that I’m not mad about.

3) Calypso Garden

Ever since I tried Calypso Garden’s chicken chow mein, I have been plotting how soon I can get back in there for some more. The skin on the chicken was perfectly crisp and no matter how much you want to tell yourself to take it easy on the carbs, these noodles won’t make that possible. Adding a little bit of their hot sauce to your food will take your experience to an entirely different level. Calypso Garden is another fusion restaurant bringing together chinese and Caribbean flavors that work so well together. The staff is very friendly and attentive, which makes you forgive the fact that you had to drive through the hot mess that is Kennedy and Clarence. All in all, this place is most definitely worth a try.

2) Daddy’s Jerk

It was definitely the friendliness of the staff that left me wanting to come back to Daddy’s Jerk. I came in looking for some guidance with my order since I couldn’t decide between oxtail and jerk chicken and the man behind the counter quickly informed me he could give me a plate with both meats. That worked out perfectly, giving me the best of both worlds and allowing me to get a better understanding of all their flavors. On top of that, when I could not decide between a side of veggies or coleslaw, I was offered a little bit of both for a more educated decision for next time.

The staff at Daddy’s knows how to make you a regular by ensuring you end up with the best possible meal and not leaving room for disappointment. Thankfully the food was just as impeccable as the service. The cool coleslaw went perfectly alongside the hot rice, oxtail and jerk, creating more elements to the dish that elevated the entire dining experience for me. Daddy’s Jerk is located right at the main intersection of Mclaughlin and Steeles, which makes it super accessible and easy to find. As I was leaving, I said my farewells to the staff and one of the regulars there made sure to let me know that nobody does it like Daddy’s Jerk, it’s definitely noteworthy when a complete stranger takes a few minutes out of their time to give a raving review of the place.

1) Radica’s Hot and Spicy

As far as comfort food goes, Radica’s Hot and Spicy is definitely my new go-to spot. It’s a little hard to find since it’s tucked away right at Queen and Rutherford, but once you get in there, it’s hard not to fall in love with the place. I went in knowing I was going to have to try their doubles and that was the first thing that both the staff members working at the counter suggested to me along with boneless goat roti. Considering the busy rush of people the restaurant had during the lunch hour that I visited, they were able to bring the food out in an impressively short amount of time. So as far as service goes, the staff at Radica’s did a great job but it is worth noting that their food spoke volumes for itself. Served hot and with the suitable amount of spice upon request, the food instantly warmed me up on the inside, which was nice (especially considering how cold it was outside). It also left me feeling like I needed to jump right into my bed for a nap, all the trimmings for the perfect comfort meal.
