5) Mayura

Acclaimed toque Ranveer Brar, an executive chef and judge on MasterChef India, just opened Mayura by Chef Ranveer Brar, his first five-star restaurant in Brampton. Brar, who is actually India's youngest executive chef, has already opened over 20 restaurants worldwide, including the well-known Banq Restaurant in Boston. Since Brar has more than earned his stripes in kitchens around the world, it's exciting to see him set up shop in a diverse GTA city with an evolving restaurant scene. Mayura offers ambiance and a menu that includes both traditional Indian and fusion fare. The resto also adapts the menu to feature specially created recipes to celebrate traditional Indian festivals.

4) JB’s Street Meat

When you think of street meat, you might think about going to town on a foot-long hot dog before a Jay’s game or after a long night of clubbing. You might even think of satisfying a hearty craving after a hectic hour at a local Costco or Canadian Tire. Even if you have fond memories of curbside sausages, you probably never associated the scrumptious meal with freshness and variety. JB’s Street Meat, which opened just a few short weeks ago in the Queen and Kennedy area in Brampton, invites diners to enjoy casual but well-crafted meat and BBQ dishes indoors. While owner Jonathan Boone and his team like to change up the menu based on the day’s shopping, they do offer some staples that diners can expect to see on the menu daily, offering a core menu with pulled pork and pulled chicken, mac and cheese, ribs and more. While fresh cuisine is incredibly popular, it’s typically associated with higher price points and the associated expenses sometimes deter diners looking to spend less on their meals. According to Boone, customers need not fear hefty price tags at his resto, as filling foods are competitively priced for the average diner.

3) Poutine Dare to Be Fresh

Wow! This is a place that specializes in poutine and they did something special. There’s enough varieties of poutine at Poutine Dare to Be Fresh to make your head spin. Every single type of poutine is always layered with cheese curds and fresh gravy, but it’s the toppings that will knock your socks off. The Bacon Double Cheeseburger Poutine was said to be the most popular topping and it is to die for. The ground hamburger and bacon bits are any meat lovers dream come true. Plus it comes with extra cheddar cheese sauce on top of it. This combination may sound extremely unhealthy—poutines generally are—but the food didn't make me feel sluggish or overly full. This poutine was made with love. The staff was super friendly and especially helpful with making the tough decision of what to order. But realistically I doubt that you can go wrong at this establishment. Though the product, contemporary and comfortable eating space and customer service were amazing, the prices are on the higher side. They say you get what you pay for and this was certainly the case. P.S. they offer loyalty cards, so you can get your seventh poutine for free.

2) Sul Irmaos Smokehouse

The Sul Irmaos Smokehouse is located in the heart of downtown Brampton and specializes in Portuguese southern fusion cuisine. The restaurant is known for its smoked meat, which is smoked (low and slow) and it was even featured on the Food Network’s You Gotta Eat Here. Must eat dishes include the beef eater (southern slow smoked brisket, deep fried okra and shrimp and collard greens, served with Creole mustard, house gravy and Caesar dressing) and the pulled pork and Beanasaurus (southern slow smoked pulled pork, homemade mama's chill, fresh cut creamy coleslaw and fried mac and cheese bites).

1) Bucatini Restaurant and Wine Bar

Located on Bovaird just east of Main is a chic and modern Italian resto that has been around for four years named Bucatini Restaurant and Wine Bar. When you walk in, you can't help but notice how contemporary the interior is—and the sign that says 'Bucatinis' in right the middle of the restaurant, which is an interesting touch. Whether you want to go on a casual date or a fancy one, this place is good for both. There are high top tables that can seat up to eight people as well as sit down booths for more romantic dates. The menu has everything from pasta to pizza to some great apps, so this restaurant wins by offering a lot in the way of both food and experience.

Bucatini is featured in the cover shot.
