At Hurontario Street and Steeles Avenue, Anjappar Chettinad is a great South Indian spot with a buffet, a regular a-la-carte menu including dosas. This place has a fantastic buffet on the weekends that is rather busy in the AM / early lunch hour. They’ve even got all your dosa classics like masala dosa, vada and amazing house-made chutney. The buffet ranges from a reasonable $10.99 for weekend mornings to $12.99 for a weekday lunch and $14.99 in the evening. Their dosas come with two chutneys, tomato and coconut, and a good serving size of sambhar, perfect in proportion with the size of the dosa. All of their chutneys and their sambhar were packed with flavour. They might have a variety of South Indian food, but their dosas are a highlight on their menu.
We announced earlier this year that a brand new Portuguese restaurant had opened in Brampton. Portas Do Mar - or, “Doors to the Sea” - has settled into a location at Main and Vodden, where Martin’s BBQChicken used to be. The location is now under new ownership. The restaurant boasts BBQ chicken, grilled meat, and seafood on their menu, with healthy sides of potatoes, veggies, and rice. Anyone craving flavourful grilled meat in hearty portions seems to be in for a treat, as the resto is easily accessible to visitors from its central location.
3) Sushi House
Who says sushi can’t be romantic? Located just north on Main in the heart of downtown Brampton is a Japanese restaurant that has been around for eight years and looks just as good now as it did when it first opened. Sushi house is very inviting, with booths on one side and private dining rooms on the other. This place is great for a date, as the booths offer an intimate setting with ample privacy. As far as the menu goes, the food is on point and your date will be satisfied--especially with the complimentary crunchy noodle soup that kicks off every meal!
If you thought the name of this place was quirky, wait until you step inside! The Khana Sutra is a spacious Queen Street East restaurant that boasts an expansive, delicious menu, with both traditional items and traditional items with a Western spin, playful decor and relaxing live music that augments a pleasant meal, and it can be reminiscent of an Indian banquet hall party, which gives it all a fun vibe. The service is friendly and attentive and the food is a cut above typical Indian fare. If you're looking to share a meal, try the lime prawn pakoras and the Bharwaan Tandoori mushroom caps. If you want to be wow'd, order the Shehnai Ghosht entree (lamb roasted with cardamom and a herb-flavoured sauce) with some moist garlic naan. You won't be disappointed—especially if you top the meal off with some tasty Canadian wine.
1) 168 Sushi
This popular AYCE sushi joint is hidden in a plaza near Kennedy and Glidden that’s well worth your time! If you have an appetite for sushi, 168 has a variety of classic sushi options that you absolutely can’t go wrong with. They have a few different styles of tables which is fun — you can take your shoes off and sit on the floor or you can sit at a regular table. This palce is great for a large group or even a solo sushi adventure…if you’re prepared to eat ALL the sushi that is!
