At Hurontario Street and Steeles Avenue, Anjappar Chettinad is a great South Indian spot with a buffet, a regular a-la-carte menu including dosas. This place has a fantastic buffet on the weekends that is rather busy in the AM / early lunch hour. They’ve even got all your dosa classics like masala dosa, vada and amazing house-made chutney. The buffet ranges from a reasonable $10.99 for weekend mornings to $12.99 for a weekday lunch and $14.99 in the evening. Their dosas come with two chutneys, tomato and coconut, and a good serving size of sambhar, perfect in proportion with the size of the dosa. All of their chutneys and their sambhar were packed with flavour. They might have a variety of South Indian food, but their dosas are a highlight on their menu.
Presentation and cleanliness is key for a dine-in experience and August 8 hit all the right notes in those categories. Located on the lower floor of Bramalea City Centre, August 8 provides Japanese cuisine as well as Chinese. Brampton does not have a lot of spots for dim sum and August 8 was able to bring it to our city in a modern and approachable way. We say approachable because if you've never had dim sum, some of the dishes might seem a little out there, from chicken feet to seafood prepared in ways you may not necessarily be used to. August 8 allows you to enjoy these dishes in a much more modern setting so as to ease you into the idea of trying these foods. By choosing the all-you-can-eat option, the restaurant lets you place orders on iPads, which makes it easy to order at your own leisure. If you go for the dim sum, we highly recommend the cheese wonton as well as the fried eggplant with minced shrimp.
3) Wok of Fame
Whether you like typical Chinese takeout food, sushi, dim sum or you’re just up for anything, Wok of Fame can check off all your taste boxes. Many pieces of food are made fresh and out in the open, like their sushi (they even have their own Wok of Fame roll which is very tasty). The restaurant’s selling point is that you can create dishes for staff to cook or grill to your exact liking. Once you hit dessert, things get stressful because there are so many options to choose from. I counted 13 types of ice cream! We highly recommend that you save room for green tea and mango ice cream as well as coconut or mango pudding. And think of me when you have a cream puff. I do wish they had an unlimited tea station though.
Tucked into a corner of a plaza at Mayfield and Hurontario, you won't find Antica Osteria easily. But that makes the trip to this swanky restaurant even more rewarding when you find it. Antica serves both grilled and fried calamari, but their fried calamari dish is one of their most popular apps, and for good reason. Their squid rings are lightly breaded and the ideal texture for calamari, and they're served with a homemade tzatziki sauce with extra lime. The portion size is perfect and there's enough delicious calamari to share. Warning: you may become a calamari snob after you've tried it from Antica.
If you love Filipino cuisine, you'll be excited to know that Brampton just got a new Filipino restaurant! It's called Fan “D” Flame, and it's serving up some delicious food from its spot in the plaza at Main and Bovaird, in the same area at Rona and the passport office. What can you expect to eat at Fan “D” Flame? A ton of classic Filipino dishes, with some Chinese and Western fusion, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. From fried rice and noodles, to chicken wings and spring rolls, to halo-halo and lechon, you’ll find it all at Fan “D” Flame. According to the owners, this new restaurant offers dine-in, takeout and even catering. Restaurant owners highlight that Fan “D” Flame roasts their pic in house, with an oven that can fit eight pigs for roasting. It’s called Cebu’s lechon, and if you eat pork, this is definitely something you’ll want to try. And, this place serves bubble tea! ...and there's a buffet.
