5. La Cakery
La Cakery is every sweet tooth's slice of heaven. With a pastry case full of cookies, cannoli and custard tarts, it was hard to focus my attention on the cupcakes. But I did, and I am sure glad I did! Choosing between cupcakes topped with strawberries, sprinkles, and cookies was tough, but I settled on a classic red velvet one. I opted to eat this cupcake as a sandwich, because I wanted to get the cream cheese to cake ratio as perfect as possible. The cake itself was fluffy and light, but my favourite part was the rich cream cheese frosting. Top that with the extremely patient staff as I asked a few times for recommendations, this is definitely a spot worth checking out.
4. 168 Sushi
This popular AYCE sushi joint is hidden in a plaza near Kennedy and Glidden that’s well worth your time! If you have an appetite for sushi, 168 has a variety of classic sushi options that you absolutely can’t go wrong with. They have a few different styles of tables which is fun — you can take your shoes off and sit on the floor or you can sit at a regular table. This place is great for a large group or even a solo sushi adventure…if you're prepared to eat ALL the sushi that is!
The Crown and Lion feels like one of those places you can see yourself coming back to any night of the week. The Crown and Lion has been a favorite for many Bramptonians because of the friendly and inviting atmosphere. Nearing Brampton’s border at Financial and Steeles, this pub doesn’t fall in line with the usual dark toned aesthetic that most pubs seem to have. With the Crown and Lion, right when you walk in you’ll quickly notice how well-lit the entire joint is and the bright colour scheme will also grab your attention. They have a lot of great theme nights, including Monday nights for wings and Wednesday nights for pub trivia. My personal favourite and main recommendation is their wings, but if you’re looking to grab something to share with friends, I also suggest trying their spinach and artichoke dip or the wings. Either way, you’ll leave knowing you had great food in a great place.
At Williams and Main, this Portuguese family-owned churrasqueira has some incredible BBQ chicken. Though lineups often extend in the small space from counter to door during their dinner rush, you’ll still manage to get in and out in about 10 minutes. Get there just before the rush for an even quicker experience. Pick your faves from their takeout counter - all of the fresh food is displayed in front of you. Go here if you want your BBQ chicken done right, if you’re a piri piri sauce connoisseur, and most of all, if you want a fresh, flavourful bite and you’re on a time crunch.
This Portuguese bakery in downtown Brampton near Main and Church does a lot of things right - they make great pie, they have lots of bread and meat, and they make a mean soup! Nova Grill changes up their soup of the day daily, and for about $3, you can get a steaming bowl of their daily concoction, best enjoyed with a giant bun from their bakery, and a custard tart for dessert. Below is a vegetable soup from Nova, which was a smooth potato puree with chopped spinach and carrots, plus the right amount of flavours and spices to be considered, as they say, "yummy in my tummy." Nova is open bright and early at 8 a.m. so you can get soup at almost any time of day, and you can get it for there or to-go. What's more, the service is friendly and you'll always feel at home in the resto's cozy setting.
