A new, unique Indian restaurant boasting traditional flavours and a specialty opened recently in Brampton, and readers are a-buzz. It’s called Paranthe Wali Gali - which means “the lane of parantha-makers” - and it’s located at Clarence and Kennedy. A parantha is an Indian flatbread that’s popular in different styles in South Asian countries. The flatbread is typically flaky and can be stuffed with different ingredients. Paranthe Wali Gali serves a whopping almost 60 different kinds of paranthe (plural of parantha), including butter chicken, beet root, and chicken biryani. Some of the paranthe are inspired by different South Asian regions, like Chennai (parantha with potatoes and southern-flavoured herbs) and Kashmir (parantha with kidney beans and Indian herbs).
Quick service, large portions, and possibly the best hot sauce on this list - Portas Do Mar took Martin's BBQ's place in a plaza on Main St., and while we miss Martin's, Portas Do Mar is a pretty awesome spot itself. At this Portuguese bar and grill, you get a choice of white or dark meat, plus rice and potatoes, for a steeper price of $12 compared to other spots on this list, but the food is delicious. The hot sauce is tangy and has an incredible kick to it, so make sure you pour that stuff over everything, the potatoes have a thin outer layer that just melts when you pop them in our mouth, and the rice have a unique lemon flavour to them. As for the chicken, the skin is flavourful and and the meat is tender. The best part? Service here is very quick, especially for take-out. You could be in and out in well under 10 minutes.
If you want a great artisan sandwich (especially a loaded veal one with all the fixings), this is the place to go. Hidden in an industrial-ish area just around the corner from Williams Parkway and Torbram, That Italian Place is a very busy spot with an authentic Italian feel. A word of caution when you visit: order early or have time to spare. This absolute gem of a restaurant appeared on The Food Network's You Gotta Eat Here in 2013 and for good reason - every item on the menu looks and tastes authentically delicious. If you're in the mood for a hearty veal sandwich with all the toppings, you truly shouldn't look anywhere else. The veal is tender, the mushrooms are filling and flavourful and the hot peppers add a certain wow factor that makes the sandwich complete. Another awesome item on their menu is the authentic woodfired pizza! If you're looking to grab lunch, this is the ideal spot.
Presentation and cleanliness is key for a dine in experience and August 8 hit all the right notes in those categories. Located on the bottom floor of Bramalea City Centre, August 8 provides Japanese cuisine as well as Chinese. As mentioned above, Brampton does not have a lot of spots for dim sum and August 8 was able to bring it to our city in a modern and approachable way. I say approachable because if you’ve never had dim sum, some of the dishes might seem a little out there, from chicken feet to seafood prepared in ways you may not necessarily be used to. August 8 allows you to enjoy these dishes in a much more modern setting so as to ease you into the idea of trying these foods. By choosing the all-you-can-eat option, the restaurant lets you place orders on iPads, which makes it easy to order at your own leisure. If you go for the dim sum, I highly recommend the cheese wonton as well as the fried eggplant with minced shrimp.
This spot, while not AYCE, provides amazing sushi at a reasonable price. The food is fantastic and could easily compete with any other Peel Region sushi joint for the title of best Japanese in town. Tracing its roots to humble beginnings in the infamous Shopper's World, this spot sits up top in the same plaza as the crowned king (Queen) of Shawarma at Hurontario and Bovaird. Do yourself a favor and try this place out. Quality over quantity is sometimes key.
