As far as comfort food goes, Radica’s Hot and Spicy is definitely my new go-to spot (and featured in our cover photo!). It’s a little hard to find since it’s tucked away right at Queen and Rutherford, but once you get in there, it’s hard not to fall in love with the place. I went in knowing I was going to have to try their doubles and that was the first thing that both the staff members working at the counter suggested to me along with boneless goat roti. Considering the busy rush of people the restaurant had during the lunch hour that I visited, they were able to bring the food out in an impressively short amount of time. So as far as service goes, the staff at Radica’s did a great job but it is worth noting that their food spoke volumes for itself. Served hot and with the suitable amount of spice upon request, the food instantly warmed me up on the inside, which was nice (especially considering how cold it was outside). It also left me feeling like I needed to jump right into my bed for a nap, all the trimmings for the perfect comfort meal.
If you’re looking for a brand new lunch (or dinner) spot, you are in luck--a brand new Caribbean fusion restaurant recently opened its door in downtown Brampton. Spicy Island Jerk Caribbean Fusion set up shop in the downtown core early in March month and is satisfying the bustling downtown crowd with a range of comforting Caribbean classics, including jerk pork, fried chicken, curry goat, oxtail, stew fish, chicken soup and more. Centrally located on Main Street, the resto is easily accessible for workers looking to grab a quick lunch or visitors hoping to enjoy a dinner that’s on the hotter side. As for the resto’s signature dish, operators recommend the jerk chicken and jerk pork.
When you think of street meat, you might think about going to town on a foot-long hot dog before a Jay's game or after a long night of clubbing. You might even think of satisfying a hearty craving after a hectic hour at a local Costco or Canadian Tire. Even if you have fond memories of curbside sausages, you probably never associated the scrumptious meal with freshness and variety. JB's Street Meat invites diners to enjoy casual but well-crafted meat and BBQ dishes indoors. While owner Jonathan Boone and his team like to change up the menu based on the day's shopping, they do offer some staples that diners can expect to see on the menu daily, offering a core menu with pulled pork and pulled chicken, mac and cheese, ribs and more. While fresh cuisine is incredibly popular, it's typically associated with higher price points and the associated expenses sometimes deter diners looking to spend less on their meals. According to Boone, customers need not fear hefty price tags at his resto, as filling foods are competitively priced for the average diner.
The Sul Irmaos Smokehouse is located in the heart of downtown Brampton and specializes in Portuguese southern fusion cuisine. The restaurant is known for its smoked meat, which is smoked (low and slow) and it was even featured on the Food Network's You Gotta Eat Here. Must eat dishes include the beef eater (southern slow smoked brisket, deep fried okra and shrimp and collard greens, served with Creole mustard, house gravy and Caesar dressing) and the pulled pork and Beanasaurus (southern slow smoked pulled pork, homemade mama’s chill, fresh cut creamy coleslaw and fried mac and cheese bites).
Recently, we announced that we were pretty pumped to hear that a brand new Portuguese restaurant had opened in Brampton. Portas Do Mar - or, "Doors to the Sea" - has settled into a location at Main and Vodden, where Martin's BBQ Chicken used to be. The location is now under new ownership. The restaurant boasts BBQ chicken, grilled meat, and seafood on their menu, with healthy sides of potatoes, veggies, and rice. Anyone craving flavourful grilled meat in hearty portions seems to be in for a treat, as the resto is easily accessible to visitors from its central location.
