They’re right when they say they have “the best fish and chips in town.” Located in a plaza on Main Street North, the restaurant has a lot to offer. Not only do they serve five different types of fish but also salads and appetizers. The staff wasn’t very talkative but knew how to make good fish and chips. I got the small halibut and chips meal for about $10. The fish was fresh, soft and the batter melted in my mouth. The fries were good but a little soft, so they might disappoint if you prefer a crispy texture. The dining area was huge and clean. If you’re planning on eating in or taking out, Henry’s is a great choice to satisfy your fish and chips craving.
This is the kind of fried chicken that satisfies all cheat meal cravings. Located just north of Steeles on Winston Churchill, the Chicken Shop at Maple Lodge farms truly feels like a hidden gem for fried chicken in Brampton. Something I couldn’t overlook was the delicate seasoning which didn’t overpower the chicken but rather complemented it. On top of it all, their portions are generous--they certainly don’t skip out on making sure you get a big hearty piece of chicken. There’s no area to sit down and eat, so you’ll have to take this chicken to go but comfort food like this is always best enjoyed in the comfort of your own home anyways.
Located just around the corner from Williams Parkway and Torbram, That Italian Place is a very busy spot with an authentic Italian feel. A word of caution to you when you visit: order early or have time to spare. I made the mistake of just popping in at lunch, hoping to quickly get a taste of a stone oven pizza. Unfortunately for me, there was no chance of a fast getaway; the restaurant was completely packed, and for good reason: every item I could feast my eyes on looked absolutely delightful and tempting. Despite a line that spanned the length of the store, the efficient staff made sure that customers’ orders were placed promptly, and within five minutes of my arrival I had my cappuccino and cannoli to go. The coffee was traditional, well made and thoroughly enjoyed, especially with the cannoli. It warmed my heart on a bitter day; next time, I’ll make sure I get a taste of the pizza too.
Mimi’s wins the award having excellent fish and chips and the cheesiest poutine. This small mom and pop shop squeezed in the middle of a small plaza on Main Street stole the show with their method of cheese-ing their poutines. The cook layered shredded cheese on the bottom of the container, then throughout the rest of the french fries and gravy. Also of note, this is a fun poutine to eat for the twirlers out there. The poutine is so cheesy that you have to twirl the strings of cheese around your fork before even thinking of taking a bite. It’s quite honestly a cheese explosion. The fries have the right amount of crisp, the gravy is savoury but not too heavy and the small is a good portion for two people to share at a reasonable price. And Mimi’s has lots of upsides! They have a vast variety of food that you need to check out for yourself. In fact, I have four words for you that are totally unrelated to fish and chips: Deep-fried Mars bar.
This is the spot in Brampton when it comes to shawarma. I will happily put this joint up against any place in the GTA when it comes to Arab grub. Straight flexin’ like Nate Diaz at a UFC weigh in, I bring my co-workers, family, friends and lovers here for food on the regular and it never disappoints. The staff here are absolutely the nicest people you will meet in the shawarma game. Support your local, independent business, especially when they are this good!
