5. Mimi’s Fish and Chips

Mimi’s wins the award having excellent fish and chips and the cheesiest poutine. This small mom and pop shop squeezed in the middle of a small plaza on Main Street stole the show with their method of cheese-ing their poutines. The cook layered shredded cheese on the bottom of the container, then throughout the rest of the french fries and gravy. Also of note, this is a fun poutine to eat for the twirlers out there. The poutine is so cheesy that you have to twirl the strings of cheese around your fork before even thinking of taking a bite. It’s quite honestly a cheese explosion. The fries have the right amount of crisp, the gravy is savoury but not too heavy and the small is a good portion for two people to share at a reasonable price. And Mimi’s has lots of upsides! They have a vast variety of food that you need to check out for yourself. In fact, I have four words for you that are totally unrelated to fish and chips: Deep-fried Mars bar.

4. That Italian Place

If you want a great artisan sandwich (especially a loaded veal one with all the fixings), this is the place to go. Hidden in an industrial-ish area just around the corner from Williams Parkway and Torbram, That Italian Place is a very busy spot with an authentic Italian feel. A word of caution when you visit: order early or have time to spare. This absolute gem of a restaurant appeared on The Food Network’s You Gotta Eat Here in 2013 and for good reason - every item on the menu looks and tastes authentically delicious. If you’re in the mood for a hearty veal sandwich with all the toppings, you truly shouldn’t look anywhere else. The veal is tender, the mushrooms are filling and flavourful and the hot peppers add a certain wow factor that makes the sandwich complete. Another awesome item on their menu is the authentic woodfired pizza! If you’re looking to grab lunch, this is the ideal spot.

3. Radica’s Hot and Spicy

As far as comfort food goes, Radica’s Hot and Spicy is definitely a hotspot. It’s a little hard to find since it’s tucked away right at Queen and Rutherford, but once you get in there, it’s hard not to fall in love with the place. The first thing that both the staff members working at the counter suggest is the doubles along with boneless goat roti. They're able to bring the food out in an impressively short amount of time. So as far as service goes, the staff at Radica’s did a great job but it is worth noting that their food spoke volumes for itself. Served hot and with a suitable amount of spice upon request, the food instantly warms you up on the inside, which is great.

2. J. Red & Co

Definitely one of the most modern restaurants in Brampton, from the atmosphere to the innovative menu. Located on Vodden and Main is one of the gems in the city. Chef Jason Rosso is the mastermind behind the menu and if his name sounds familiar to you, it's probably because he has appeared on such TVshows as Restaurant Makeover, Recipe to Riches and the Marilyn Denis Show. He is known for offering familiar food with a twist and the menu does not disappoint. What's better than going out on a date and experimenting with a new style of food you have never tried before? You can try things like smoked cheddar mac 'n cheese, egg rolls and crispy fried cauliflower ‘wings.’ Our favourite is the Bob and Doug burger.

1. Henry’s Fish & Chips

They’re right when they say they have “the best fish and chips in town.” Located in a plaza on Main Street North, the restaurant has a lot to offer. Not only do they serve five different types of fish but also salads and appetizers. The staff wasn’t very talkative but knew how to make good fish and chips. I got the small halibut and chips meal for about $10. The fish was fresh, soft and the batter melted in my mouth. The fries were good but a little soft, so they might disappoint if you prefer a crispy texture. The dining area was huge and clean. If you’re planning on eating in or taking out, Henry’s is a great choice to satisfy your fish and chips craving.
