Charges have officially been laid following the abduction of a young girl that lead to the second homicide of the year in Peel Region.

On Thursday, February 14, police say 11 year old Riya Rajkumar was out with her father, Roopesh Rajkumar.

The investigation began just before 7:00 p.m. that night when Riya’s mother reported to police that Riya had not been returned home at the expected time.

“The mother was further concerned for the wellbeing of the two of them when Roopesh Rajkumar made comments indicating that he was going to harm himself and his daughter,” police say.

An Amber Alert was issued.

Later that evening, Riya was located deceased in a residence in the area of Queen Street and Hansen Road in Brampton.

Roopesh Rajkumar was located and arrested by OPP in the Township of Oro-Medonte, reportedly as a result of information provided in the Amber Alert.

Roopesh Rajkumar is charged with first-degree murder and is currently in a trauma centre in relation to a medical condition.

Police say he will attend court in Brampton once he is medically cleared.

This incident marks Peel’s second homicide of 2019, and makes this the second year in a row in which one of the first homicides was a domestic femicide.

Anyone with further information related to this investigation is asked to call the Homicide and Missing Persons Bureau at (905) 453–2121, ext. 3205.
