Although there are some parking tickets you don’t have to worry about, others do require your immediate attention.

The city of Brampton recently reminded residents that it doesn’t pay to postpone honoring a municipal (meaning a slip distributed by the city rather than a private parking firm) ticket. If you wait too long to pay for an infraction, a $35 fine can quickly increase to $180.

Not only do fees climb if tickets are ignored or forgotten, you may find it difficult to renew your vehicle registration if you have outstanding charges.

According to the city, the latest staff report to council shows that between June 1, 2015 and May 31, 2016, more than 24,000 parking penalty notices were sent to the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) for licence plate denial.
If you ignore or forget about a ticket, you may have to grapple with late payment, MTO search and licence plate denial fees (and they can definitely add up, not to mention cause serious inconvenience).

To make things a little easier, Brampton uses what is called an Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS) to process tickets. The city-run system allows residents to dispute parking tickets without having to go through the court system (which typically means waiting a year or more for a resolution).

“We have improved the parking penalty appeal process by making it easier and significantly faster than the traditional court system,” says Peter Fay, city clerk, in a recent news release. “Now we urge customers to do their bit by acting fast on their parking ticket. Timely actions such as paying the penalty, or scheduling and making sure they attend the Screening or Hearing Review are important to avoid any impact on their vehicle registration renewal.”

The city can schedule up to 480 screenings a month, effectively reducing wait times to 30-45 days.

So, if you do get a parking ticket that you don’t care to dispute, be sure to pay it within 15 days to avoid a late fee. If you want to challenge the infraction, you can schedule a screening review by calling 311 or 905-874-2404.
